Asaph became a prominuent Portland citizen, taught school in town and Middletown, an owner of Strong and Hale Lumber. He lived at 430 Main Street. Bud's Café 2019George M. Gilbert IIICharles "Bud" Hale and a friend, Cy Trebbe, purchased a gas station near the bridge known as Calso Gas Station. He lunched at Cannata's Café across the street, owned by Nebo Milardo. Nebo asked Bud to help out during the busy lunch time. After Nebo's death he purchased the property in 1968. Bud died of cancer in 1980 at age 49. His son-in-law Michaerl Estabrook, ran the business until 1981 when Bud's daughter Sue took over as permittee. In 1998 Sue sublet the business for 10 years. After an extensive renovation Michael's daughter Amy took over. Amy'd daughter Harper represents the next generation.1Nov 2019 (.pdf)Vol. 45 No. 03

C.S.B. Incorporated 2020George M. Gilbert IIICharlie Shefcyk started his business in Middletown in 1972. In 1986 it was relocated to 100 Brownstone Avenue in Portland. Historic Sites 1978Have been busy with seed money from the Community Development Fund. They plan to mark 5 sites with bronze plaques and working to identify historic homes which will receive wooden plaques. Markers are for: Indian Hill Avenue, Cox Mill sites, brownstone quarries, tinware factory, first ferry crossing. Asking for more funds to identify homes aand asked home owners for some financial help. The site of the Jewish Burial Grounds has been located thanks to Helen Carlson. Historic Sites Accomplishes Project 1979Five bronze site markers mounted on brownstone slabs to be added to one currently at the Mill Site on Rose Hill. Sites are: brownstone quarries, first ferry landing,shipyards Indian grounds,first meeting house and old Jewish cemetery. History…Sylvester Gildersleeve's Building gets a "Touch-up!" 2012Doris Sherrow-HeidenisOwner of Portland Floor & Wall Covering was repairing the building's garage door at 646 Main Street. Notes of Interest 1986Gildersleeve School originally had both elementary and high school classes. It was built in 1876 and was the FIRST PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL conducted in any town in Connecticut. It was destroyed by fire in 1889. Classes then held in Old Town Hall at the corner of Bartlett & High streets. Classes resumed until 1899 when classes transferred to Central School. Originally the town was divided into districts with the first school in the Rose Hill District - Rose Hill School, closed in 1936, the last country school in Portland.2Sum 1986 (.pdf)

As interstae highways were created these types of facilities turned into motels with more amenities desired by travelers. The Sad Fate of Joseph Stancliff 2017Julie MacksoudJoseph Stancliuff, Jr. was on ill-fated steamboat America on Lake Erie on July 31, 1850. The head of one of the boilers blew off causing the deaths of a dozen people, injuring more than 22. Two weeks later his body was returned to Portland for burial in Trinity Cemetery. Town Poor Farm 2002Built around 1800, home of Hezekiah Goodrich Pelton. Rooms added after purchase by Town of Chatham, complete with a cell for those who misbehaved.
